The basic properties of many pyrrolizidine alkaloids are well known l.5, A lthough they have been isolated from representatives of about 13 plant fami lies, they occur most abundantly in the large genera sen~cio (Asteraceae), Crola/aria (Papilionaceae) and in many members of Boraginaceae including Heliotropium and CynoglossUlI1. More recently they have been detected in LepidopheraJ,4 Over 75 spec ies of genus Cynog/ossum found to be distributed in the mountain regions of subtropical and temperilte zones. Only a few species have been studied in detai I for pyrrolizidine alkaloids. 12 . Remaining species have not been explored and this prompted us to undertake a systematic study of the available CYl1oglossum species. CYI10g/0SSUlI1 jurca/Llm is found in and around the ilgiris, a mountainolls land situated at the junction of western and eastern Ghats of South India. It is a rare and an erect annual herb with blue inflorescence found in western G hats about 4000 feet. It is often noticed in graze lands in spring season. Trial experiments showed that Cynog/ossum jurcafulI1 collected in the flowering season (May) gave optima l yie lds of alkaloids (0.05% from aerial parts and 0.06% from roots ). Pyrrolizidine alka loids present in aerial parts and roots are different and they are analysed separately. Extract ion of the root, fractionati on and purification afforded a homogenous bas ic substance, neo coramandal ine 1, a previoLls ly unreported isomer of coramandaline as a pale ye llow gum. 9 C~R

Enantioselective total synthesis of (+)-amabiline.
The first total synthesis of (+)-amabiline, an unsaturated pyrrolizidine alkaloid from Cynoglossum amabile, is reported. This convergent, enantioselective synthesis proceeds in 15 steps (10-step longest linear sequence) in 6.2% overall yield and features novel methodology to construct the unsaturated pyrrolizidine or (-)-supinidine core.
